When someone leaves, their pay stops, but until now TheMetrics kept charging their salary to every period after it. Cost per story point drifted up, capacity looked larger than it was, and payroll included people who no longer work here. You can now say when someone left, and every number follows.
How to do it
Go to People, open the person, and find Employment at the top of the Profile tab. Choose End employment…, pick their last working day, and confirm. It works the same whether they resigned or were let go.
Made a mistake? The same place offers Reinstate…, which puts every number back exactly as it was.
What changes in the numbers
Their last working day is still a paid day. From the next day on:
- Salary is no longer counted in any cost metric: team salary, lifecycle cost, cost per story point, sprint cost, task cost and project cost.
- Capacity no longer includes them, so planning, milestone forecasts and delivery capacity stop assuming they are available.
- Headcount and payroll on the People page count only current employees. People who left are shown separately as former.
- SP per engineer no longer divides by them in sprints after they left.
A period they worked only part of is charged only for the days they were employed. If someone's last day is the 15th, that month carries 15 days of their salary and the next month carries none.
The work they delivered stays. Every story point, task and hour from before their last day is still counted in velocity, flow, quality and cost. Ending someone's employment never changes the numbers of a period they worked in, apart from removing the pay for days after they left.
In the People table
People who left keep their place in the list but are shown muted, below current staff, with a Left label and the date. Someone whose last day is still ahead shows as Leaving. Use the Current / Former / All filter to narrow the list.
Who can do it
You need access to financial information. Nobody can end their own employment, and only admins can end the employment of someone at the same or a higher role.
Ending employment also turns off the person's sign-in. Reinstating does not turn it back on by itself. Re-enable it on the License tab if they should have access again.
